So I was just surprised to find this is my 2nd year here on cookiehangover! wowza! surely I was gone for about half a year so it doesn’t really count if I’m not posting. Anyway..yay!
I’ve actually been very busy overdosing on cookies the last few days. I’ve always wanted to decorate cookies using royal icing and I finally went for it. On a whim (as it is usually the case with me) I got a bunch of materials and tutorials and went to work! I decided to begin by making my husband’s plush dog Sammy. He’s had that thing for years and years and protects it like it’s a rare jewel so I always have fun by hiding him around the apartment and having him hunt for the silly dog. I get a good laugh usually..lol
I made royal icing and had a lot of fails with the colors. The gel food color I ordered still hasn’t arrived so I had to settle for this powder type I had at home. I experimented with molasses and the powders trying to make dark brown – all to no avail. I barely managed to make the dark grey for his eyeballs and then I messed up the first snouts I made in that color. Well..it was my first time doing this so I suppose we all can’t have beginner’s luck! I made a normal sugar cookie dough and used the cardboard template I made to trace and cut out the cookies.
Since by this time a week had elapsed, what with waiting for the icing to dry completely for the transfers and the messing up part; I had to throw away the icing I had left in the fridge because I am only willing to risk raw egg whites in the fridge for a week. So I made more. This time I got the idea to use espresso to color the icing! Well..it made a lovely beige but I had to add instant coffee crystals as well. It ended up pretty tasty actually. Like coffee cookies. This part was really easy. Just had to flood the cookie with the new icing and add the body parts I had made before.
I decided to leave it like this and not add extra details like a mouth and extra definition to the ears. It was more than enough icing already and I still had not received my piping tips for smaller details. I did order the most awful piping bags in existence! If you are new to the cookie game do NOT..I repeat, DO NOT, order disposable bags by Mason Cash. They are the absolute worse and can make the whole experience suck from start to finish. These bags break in every place possible. The perforation to pull them apart sucks and you have to use a pair of scissors. It made me want to pull my hair out when the stupid bag exploded on the seams and ruined what I was doing and took me ages to get done.
I suppose those are the things people without any experience have to learn when buying materials for this but it still pissed me off. They aren’t cheap either so I found it to be a very bad buy. Anyway..because I was left with half a batch of cookie dough and loads of brown icing, I’m making different cookies now. Owls! Already made the body parts and they just need to dry over night. I will show you photos when they are done.
Now, you might be wondering, what is this girl thinking making cookies! She will devour them all! I know..I know. But I promise you I am being good. I bought some cellophane bags so I can gift some to neighbours. So they won’t all remain at home.
On even better news!!! We finally have a time to move into our new house! I know..after what will be about a year and a half, we can finally continue the planning for the move. Woohoo! I can go order my new kitchen soon and..well I am thinking only of the positive at the moment. Not of the amount of packing I will still have to do. Anyone free to help pack and renovate an apartment? We will be spending Christmas in our new house and I’m absolutely ecstatic! Waited long enough for this and it’s finally happening.
